PostHeaderIcon St. Pete Beach-We call it Home

Buona Pizza is so fortunate and proud to call St. Pete Beach home. For us guys from Philly, we are so happy to be here where we get to enjoy the sunshine, the gorgeous water and the friendliest people in the world. Whether you are a full-time resident, snowbird, or this is your very first visit to the town that we have come to love, we look forward to making you feel at home when you come to Buona Pizza!

The City of St. Pete Beach is a barrier island community located just off the Pinellas County mainland with a permanent population of about 10,032 (latest estimate from the University of Florida) The city is also a popular winter residence for many people living in other parts of the United States, Canada and Europe.

Property records show that about 28 percent of the total residential dwelling units in the city are owned by people claiming the primary residence elsewhere.

The city was incorporated in 1957 with the consolidation of the Towns of Pass-a-Grille, Don CeSar, Belle Vista, St. Petersburg Beach and unincorporated Pinellas County to become the City of St. Petersburg Beach. In 1994, the citizens voted to shorten the name to St. Pete Beach to lessen the confusion with the City of St. Petersburg, located on the mainland to the east.

St. Pete Beach  is a significant tourist destination, having over 3,000 transient accommodation units, including major hotel and motel operations as well as many smaller, more intimate lodging facilities.

PostHeaderIcon Say Cheese!

Cheese. Whether as the major component of your favorite pizza pie, the taste that ties the ingredients of your meat lasagna together, or just that little extra flavor that makes your salad pop, if you’re like us that is what it’s all about.

And here at Buona we know cheese! Here is a quick refresher course for all you fellow cheese-lovers.

Mozzarella–This is the main man, the real deal, used in just about every pizza, sandwich, and dish we make. Mozzarella is actually a generic term for several kinds of italian cheeses that are made using spinning and then cutting (hence the name, as the Italian verb mozzare means “to cut”.)  Fresh mozzarella is generally white, but may vary seasonally to slightly yellow depending on the animal’s diet. It is a semi-soft cheese. Due to its high moisture content, it is traditionally served the day it is made.

Ricotta (literally meaning “recooked”) uses the whey, a limpid, low-fat, nutritious liquid that is a by-product of cheese production. Can you believe this delicious cheese is just the reheated whey left over from cheese making? Ricotta is a fresh cheese (as opposed to ripened or aged), grainy and creamy white in appearance, slightly sweet in taste, and contains around 13% fat. In this form, it is somewhat similar in texture to some cottage cheese variants, though considerably lighter. And here at Buona it’s what makes our Bianca (white pies without red or marinara sauce) such a creamy indulgent pizza.

Parmagiano cheese (the same cheese manufactured elsewhere is referred to as Parmesan), is a hard granular cheese, cooked but not pressed, named after the producing areas near Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, and Bologna (all in Emilia-Romagna), and Mantova (in Lombardia), Italy. Under Italian law only cheese produced in these provinces may be labelled “Parmigiano-Reggiano”, while European law classifies the name as a protected designation of origin. Buona uses Parmagiano in a number of ways, it’s what makes your Caesar salad have that wonderful flavor and keeps you reaching for our yummy fresh garlic knots.

American Cheese is a favorite here as well. For several sandwiches including our Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, there is nothing like the way the cheese melts in with the steak meat and onions.  And it blends with the Mozzarella in our Suffed Philly Steak Pizza to make something extra special with that taste you just can’t get anywhere but here.

Getting hungry yet? I know I sure am. Come in to where all these cheeses are put to their most flavorful uses here at Buona Pizza and taste the difference that the best and freshest ingredients make.

Life is too short for bad pizza!
